United States Conference of Mayors (USCM)
Description
The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official non-partisan organization of the nation's 1,300 cities with populations of 30,000 or more. USCM conducts its Leadership for Healthy Communities work through its Mayors Healthy Cities Campaign, an enrollment initiative which encourages mayors to address the problem of obesity--a leading cause of chronic diseases and certain types of cancers--by a) promoting the benefits of regular exercise and healthy eating; and b) establishing policies and programs that facilitate physical exercise and healthy eating, particularly among children, low-income individuals and racial and ethnic minorities.
The Mayors Healthy Cities Campaign
USCM provides Mayors with materials, information, and technical assistance in the development of policies, programs and other measures to create opportunities for increased physical activity and improved nutrition in their communities. Information is provided to mayors through Healthy Cities Campaign mailings, the Healthy Cities Information Exchange newsletter, Best Practices in the US Mayor newsletter and an upcoming Best Practices publication, and during USCM's two annual meetings. Mayors, in return, provide valuable feedback on their local activities through a survey, annual progress reports, and Best Practice submissions.
Specific products planned for the second year of the USCM grant include a report on the results of the childhood obesity survey mailed to mayors in the Spring of 2006, a Policy Brief on local policies that address childhood obesity, a Best Practices publication featuring local programs and initiatives to combat childhood obesity, and a Mayors' Childhood Obesity Tool Kit.
