Colorado
Background
Work in the Front Range started in the summer of 2002 with a partnership of the Local Government Commission (one of Leadership for Healthy Communities's national partners) and two Colorado organizations — the Livable Communities Support Center and Colorado on the Move. The National Conference of State Legislatures joined in support in 2003.
Colorado Front Range Project
Leadership for Healthy Communities is working with local and state leaders along the Front Range to help them create active living communities. Strategies include:
- Retrofitting existing neighborhoods and designing new neighborhoods to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians
- Planning and building communities with a mix of uses
- Rewriting zoning codes to support active living
- Locating schools in walkable neighborhoods
- Funding and promoting active living programs
Bringing Leaders Together
Leadership for Healthy Communities coordinated a series of meetings for Front Range local and state leaders to discuss strategies and techniques for implementing active living polices and programs. In addition to bringing national experts to the Front Range, these meetings provided opportunities for peer exchange among mayors, city council members, county supervisors and city/county managers in the state.
The three organizations created an advisory committee representing a variety of organizations and interests. The committee's first task was to assist with developing and promoting a January 2003 workshop in Denver. Subsequent bi-monthly meetings were held through November 2003. A final meeting to identify next steps and sustainability isues was held February 27, 2004.
